Sample Student Essay—CAUSE-EFFECT (CAUSAL ANALYSIS)

Moving frequently has its Disadvantages

Moving frequently can be costly and harmful to the well being of a family. As in our case, when we move, we have the expense of the moving truck. We have to either rent a truck or van, paying a high price, or borrow a friend’s pickup truck which still has the cost of fuel. We also needed helpers.  Often these helpers are sons and daughters of friends, or as in our case, unfortunate nieces and nephews.  These helpers can cost anything from the price of a pizza, to the cost of a fancy dinner on the town. The older the helpers, the more expensive the dinner seemed to be.

In any case, there are furniture and boxes to be moved. This involves heavy loads. My husband swears I would put all the heavy things in one box on purpose. I didn’t realize a TV box full of clothes could weigh so much.  Each piece of furniture or box must be moved from its place in one home, put in the truck, then removed from the truck and placed in the new home.   At this time it becomes very easy to start an argument on where everything will now go. Try to avoid the argument, I chose to let my husband decide. I then proceeded to move it all later, after he went to work. It seemed to work better that way; after all, he couldn’t remember why he wanted it there the first place.

Now we have found that nothing is more harmful to a family than a mother with a headache, a father with a backache, and children with energy to spare. This leads to a serious case of short tempers. Throw in legs and feet that hurt and the mix becomes quite volatile. We found that we seriously did not like ourselves during the moving period. I am pretty sure our children did not like us as well. I am certain counseling will be needed in their future to overcome the trauma of moving.

Bad eating habits also develop during a move. Fast food and pizza become the norm. No one can find the plates or silverware. This also added to the expense of the move.  In our case we had to stop at 12 different places to get something everyone liked. Chips, candy or cookies are sometimes given to the children by the grandparents to waylay hunger for a short time. Word of warning, which we learned the hard way, children who have had too much sugar are not fun to move with, which in turn directly relates to paragraph three, why my children will need counseling.

From my experiences, my recommendation is that everyone should stay put. Either that or go on vacation and let you parents worry about getting you moved.  This worked quite well for us on one of our moves. We just loaded up the car and left for our new home. So next time, instead of moving, we are going to try getting the biggest place we can afford. I am going to recommend this even for our friends that do not have children. You can always find stuff to fill it up. Later, when their children arrive, we can all have a huge garage sale.
