OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS SUMMARY WEB ASSIGNMENT

 

6 Please print out the following and check off the steps as you complete them.

 

____1. Go to the S.C.C. Library Home page.

 

____2. Click on Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center (right-hand column under Search Articles and Databases).

____3. If you are off-campus, enter your Student I.D. number in the box where it asks for your library card number.  Click Continue.

____4. Scan the many topics in both columns.

____5. Pick several of topics of interest, click on them, and explore each of them a bit.

____6. For each topic you explore, see if you can find two opposing essays.

 For example, under Alcoholism you will find one essay entitled Alcoholism Is a Disease and one essay entitled Alcoholism Is not a Disease. 

Under Environmentalism you will find an essay entitled The Environmental Movement is Harmful and another entitled The Environmental Movement is Effective.

Under Nuclear Weapons you will find an essay entitled North Korea is not a Nuclear Threat and another entitled North Korea Must Be Disarmed.

Under Narcotics Legalization you will find an essay entitled Drugs Should Be Legalized and another entitled Drug Should Not Be Legalized. You get the idea.

____8. Settle upon one of the topics you explored and read both opposing essays.

____9. Choose the side you agree with most and re-read the support essay.

____10. Read How to Write a Summary

 

____11. Following How to Write a Summary’s advice, write a one-page summary in your own words of the support essay you re-read in Step 9.  Your summary should not exceed a maximum of one double-spaced page of 12-point type or 150 words.

 

____12. Bring your completed summary along with a copy of the support essay you summarized to class on the due date.
