Study Skills 94 Name: ________________ J. Roth BRAINSTORMING
EXERCISE FOR RESEARCH REPORTS
STEP ONE: Ø List the two or three most important things you have learned through your study. (If you are following the Careers example, list the outline entries.) 1. __________Lens Defect______________________________ 2. __________Solutions________________________________ 3. __________Repair__________________________________ STEP TWO: Ø For #1 on your list: Free-write for five or ten minutes about what you remember—what you have learned so far about this point. For several months after first discovering the problem,
scientists considered three possible solutions. One was to build and launch a new
telescope. This would cost millions of dollars and delay
any deep space study for several years. Another solution was to build a super
computer that could clear up the pictures the current Hubble sent to
Earth. However, even a super computer
would have to "guess" several parts of an enhanced picture because
of the flaw in the original lens. A third solution was to build
and install a corrective "contact lens" for the Hubble, much as
doctors make for humans with vision problems. Ø For #2 on your list: Free-write for five or ten minutes about what you remember—what you have learned so far about this point. Ø For #3 on your list: Free-write for five or ten minutes about what you remember—what you have learned so far about this point. STEP THREE: Ø Highlight or mark the significant parts in your free writing. Re-write just the highlighted or marked parts into paragraphs. Point #1 Paragraph: For several months after first discovering the problem, scientists considered three possible solutions. One was to build and launch a new telescope. Point #2 Paragraph: Point #3 Paragraph: Draft a brief introduction: STEP FOUR: Ø Assemble the completed parts into a summary. Check your writing for grammar, spelling, and word sense. |
