Activities for The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

1.   What reasons does the story suggest for continuing the yearly ritual of the lottery?  What does this community assume will happen if they continue it?  If this community abandons this ritual (as other communities in the story have been rumored to), what might this community fear would happen?

2.   The winner/loser of the lottery might be considered a scapegoat.  First, journey to Wikipedia and browse the information available on the term scapegoat, then respond to the following:

We as a society still use scapegoats to somehow purge ourselves of what we consider to be unfortunate circumstances (crime, the economy, social behaviors).  Identify one or two scapegoats that we use and explain what they represent.
