Writing Diagnostic—Roth 102—Fall 2016
TOPIC: San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Colin Kaepernick recently ignited a
national controversy by sitting rather than standing during the playing of
the American National Anthem at the opening game of the new NFL season. In later interviews, Kaepernick
said that he chose not to stand because he was “not
going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black
people and people of color," and that he would “continue sitting during
the national anthem until he was satisfied with the changes made toward
ending racial oppression in the United States” (Wyche). Kaepernick also cited Police
Brutality as further motivation for his actions. As you can imagine, Kaepernick’s
protest garnered him both supporters and detractors. To prepare for tomorrow’s in-class diagnostic essay, please give these
issues (“racial oppression,” “police brutality”) and Kaepernick’s
actions some thought. Wyche, Steve. “Colin Kaepernick
explains why he sat during national anthem.” NFL Media, 27 Aug. 2016. Web. |
