Text: The American Tradition in Literature, 10thth Edition, Volume 2 by Perkins

American Literature 246 showcases American authors from around 1865 to the present.  During our journey, we will learn a great deal about America and its literature through the “buffet” approach, where we sample several authors and their most famous works.

Authors will include, among others, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Jack London, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Ernest Hemingway, Sylvia Plath, Alice Walker, and Louise Erdrich.  Class time will involve both small and large-group discussion.  Our goal is to make these works and authors accessible and enjoyable.
