Materials  Needed For Chinese 101:

  • Kershul, K. (1999). Chinese in 10 minutes a day. Seattle: Bilingual Books, Inc.

  • Williams, P. F. C., & Wu, Y. (1999). Chinese: The easy way. New York: Barron's Educational Series, Inc.

  • A good English-Chinese, Chinese-English dictionary (Oxford dictionary preferred)

Objectives/Outcomes:

This class offers an option for students who are interested in Chinese and Chinese culture. To make it easier for students to apply what they learn, I will focus on students' listening comprehension and speaking fluency. For the grammar part, necessary explanations to certain language points are provided while excessive theoretical introductions are avoided.

Upon completion of this class a student will be able to:

  1. read and write pinyin correctly

  2. react to classroom commands

  3. count to 100

  4. understand familiar and memorized material--word, phrase length and short

  5. begin to create simple statements using familiar, memorized material

  6. name and identify basic objects, people, and places

  7. give autobiographical information: name, age, sex, nationality

  8. describe daily routine and leisure-time activities

  9. utilize learned words, phrases, and sentences in basic face-to-face conversations

  10. handle simple survival tasks

  11. recognize some most common used characters

Requirements, Assignments, and Grading:

You are expected to meet Su Rui Lao Shi everyday. During our one-hour meeting, there will be lecture, group activity, culture appreciation, and humor in China. If you "go fishing for three days and dry the nets for two," this Chinese saying means lack of perseverance, you will miss in-class assignments. You must complete all the assignments and have them ready on the day they are due.

  • Late work will be reduced by ten percent (10 %) each day late.
  • Assignments will not be accepted after the fifth day (5 days) late.
  • No Shou ji (cell phones) are allowed to be on during the class.
cell phone user Qing guan diao shou ji, xie xie.

You don't need to call me if you miss a day of class. If you miss one week of class or more, call the number listed above and leave a message. It is your responsibility to get missed notes and assignments from your classmates.

Cheating on tests and turning in work which is not your own is not allowed at Spokane Community College and will not be tolerated. Allowing another student to see your test paper during a test is also cheating. Please don't allow yourself to be put in the position of being accused of cheating and possibly losing credits.

You will receive grades in attendance and participation (15%), lab work (10%), quizzes (15%), character writing (10%), journal writing (20%), and final assessment (test) (30%).

This class is graded on a 4.0 scale. Your grade will be based on the following:
