Jim Roth’s Website The Riddle of the
Paintings Assignment Due: Please see our
CANVAS course calendar Introduction: Neoclassicism and Romanticism are literary, artistic,
and philosophical perspectives on experience. Though specific dates for each
are difficult to establish, Neoclassicism flourished toward the end of the
1700’s with Romanticism following in the early to mid 1800’s. Each of these
perspectives suggests a very different ideal, with Romanticism being a
reaction to its predecessor, Neoclassicism. Assignment: First,
study and enjoy each set of paintings in The Tour. During your art tour, look for themes and
differences between the Neoclassic group and the Romantic group. It might
help to ask yourself what each set of paintings suggests should be our relationship
to nature and experience. In addition, be sure to read each painting’s title
and look carefully at the details. Next, in a paragraph or two, please
answer these two questions: in general, what are the
differences between the two sets of paintings, and what do these differences
suggest about these historical periods and their values? Finally, please post your
paragraphs to this forum by the due date on the calendar. |
