Monday, May 5, 2008 Scenario:
The good news is that you are the most
famous defense attorney of your time; the bad news is your time happens to be
in Venice just after Othello’s suicide.
Added to this bad news is that you are in service to the Venetian
Ruling Council. The city is already roiling over what has transpired on
Cyprus, so the Duke and his council do not want Iago’s trial and expected execution
to further incite the public. To
forestall this, the Venetian Ruling Council assigns you to be Iago’s defense
attorney, instructing you to give Iago the best defense possible. After accepting this duty, you head across
the Bridge of Sighs to the dungeon cell where Iago is being held. Writing
Assignment: Knowing what you know of
the play, how would you prepare your case and what role if any would Iago
play in his own defense? Write a
paragraph or two explaining. Then, in
another couple of paragraphs, share with us your opening argument to the
jury. |
